Independents Day postponed till early 2012

Incase you're wondering whats the story with the Independents' Day this year as for the past few years it's been happening at this time of year.

Well the year has run away for a few of us organisers so we are postponing it until early 2012, most likely the first Sunday of March.

The Dublin Zine Fair was only quite recently so postponing gives participants a chance to produce something new by March!

We had a great day at Independents' Day! Thanks a million to everyone who was involved and came down to support it!
All the stalls put in loads of work preparing their wares and they all looked class! There was a real community feel with the stalls supporting each other through trades and purchases.
The musicians Sea Dog, Lynched, Niamh de Barra, Loman O'Neill and Punky Reggae Party were all deadly! Emily from the Rag too with her readings!
Elida with Simon and Leo, did an amazing job with the Stop Motion Animation workshop and we hope to post the film up here soon or a link to it. Elida also co-ordinated the screenings and helped set up with the cinema room.
DCTV for all their work with the screenings and presentation as well as Mirin from LASC for her intro to the Betty Carino clip!
The exhibition looked amazing most of the credit goes to Julia for co-ordinating but also to loads of other people for helping with the hanging and organising (Áine, Winty, Chris, Esther), that is not to mention all the amazing artists whose work was on show.
Hazel did a excellent job co-ordinating the floor plan and tables with help from Jenny, Aoife and Moyler.
Thanks to Joe from the co-op who helped us out with setting up the cinema room and the hall in general. Also to Tim for a helping hand! Much appreciated!
Aoife and Ed co-ordinated the music performances and setting up the gear fair play to yee! Thanks to Andy for doing sound.
Loads of other people helped out in various ways with moving things, promoting, organising, co-ordinating. Respect is due!
We hope to post up photos soon in the next few days so check back here and if you took any please send them to us so we can post them up here or link them.

"Robotbag Chapter 1" (1 min), "Free range butter" (30 seconds). screening of short animations by Elida. Start workshop: Make a tiny stop motion film in one hour. Limited Spaces for workshop so sign in on arrival.

2-2:45 DCTV Looking Left: Banshee and Dole TV
DCTV programme on the seminal Irish feminist journal, Banshee, which was produced by Irish Women United in the 1970s. Contributions from Anne Speed, who was a member of Irish Women United, and from Clare Butler and Angela Coraccio of RAG (Revolutionary Anarchafeminist Group). The programme was recorded in February of this year. The programme is hosted by Louise O’Reilly, SIPTU national nursing official.

we're getting geared up for another Independents' Day! This year its gonna be on Sunday 7th Nov.

incase you dont know it Independents' day is a D.I.Y. fair of zines, records, comics, info stalls with workshops, screenings, performances & exhibitions.

we're still at the planning stages so if anyone wants to get involved they're more than welcome. we're having our first meeting this thursday 23 sept at 7.30 in Anseo pub on camden street.

Dogmedia are an independent media production collective who cover weird, wacky and satirical subjects in their short films!Ringing In Sick is about: four resourceful humans who test the tolerance levels of four human resource managers by constantly failing to show up for work after being offered a job. The aim… To see who can hold onto their job the longest without ever working a day.

3– 5.00pm We interrupt this broadcast: Is Digital TV the future of D.I.Y. Publication? by DCTV
Since September 2007, Dublin Community Television has been broadcasting to 200,000 homes across the NTL digital cable network. Ran by a co-operative and Dublin’s only community TV station. DCTV has the ambitious aim of making video production and transmission as accessible as possible. Using new, low-cost, all-digital technology, DCTV is part of a global growth in alternative, community-focused media. The organisation itself is an open membership cooperative, with schedules, programme commissioning and all other decisions being driven by members. In this workshop, DCTV staff and members will share their experiences on working with the station. Watch DCTV online: http://www.dctv.ie

Workshops (room downstairs):
12.30 – 2.00pm Mini comic workshop. Ages 8+ by Paddy
In this workshop (roughly 1 hour in length) independent comic artist and publisher Paddy Lynch will take participants through the different stages of sequential storytelling, character creation and mini-comic making. Starting with the basics of sequential storytelling each participant will tell a simple "knock knock" joke in a four panel comic strip. Next, the group will collaborate with Phil and Paddy in creating a cartoon character by combining attributes like "types of animal" with "type of occupation" (eg "Fox Postman", "Elephant Pilot",). Following this each person can create their own individual character to be used in a small 7 page mini-comic they can take home at the end of the class.

2.10 – 4.00pm Make Your Own: Books, Zines and the Art of DIY Publishing by Natalia
Natalia has been involved in Do It Yourself publishing for many years. From producing her own zine Sweet Olive, touring around the USA as part of a zine reading tour before returning to Dublin to set up Red Ink radical book and zine shop with husband Willie which between 2004-6 was a hotbed of independent publishing in Dublin. Now based in Leitrim, Natalia and Willie set up their own publishing company and recod label Stitchy Press. They have already released five records (by such Irish bands as Sea Dog, Party Weirdo, Excuses, De Novissimis, Heat Lightening) and their first book Transmorphosis & Other Short Story by Boris Belony. Here Natalia presents a two hour workshop that in her own words: “sums up everything I know about diy publishing.”

4.15 – ? History of Zine Making in Ireland by various
Informal discussion by old time zinesters PA (A Nuclear Threat/ Paranoid Visions), Niall Hope (Whose Life Is It Anyway/ React) and more (tbc) chat about producing zines back in the day: their motivations, places to distribute, etc.
